Changing Landscape for Women in Workforce in Saudi Arabia


As most people can remember, Saudi Arabia has been notorious for its gender disparity in the workforce. Vision 2030 recognizes Saudi women as an underutilized “significant asset,” and the need to designate women’s rights points in the same direction. Vision 2030’s objective is to create millions of jobs for women. In Saudi Arabia, female labor force participation increased from 25.9% in the first quarter of 2020 to 31.4% in the second quarter. Vision 2030’s socioeconomic transformation, which aims to better citizens’ quality of life and raise their aspirations, has increased the number of women in the labor force. According to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, women will no longer experience pay discrimination in the private sector. With Vision 2030, social acceptance, and, most importantly, the government’s continued support, we will see gender-balanced leadership in both the private and public sectors. However, as the world prepares for a more sustainable future, the Kingdom has begun exploring innovative methods to boost its economy. Therefore, women’s empowerment is central to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 reform program, which has broad social and economic goals, including a rise in women’s economic participation. While these regulations are a step in the right direction toward empowering women and expanding leadership opportunities for them, let us look at why female talent is crucial to the Saudi Arabia Vision 2030. 

Economic Diversification

One of the main goals of Vision 2030 is to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy beyond oil. To achieve this, the country needs to tap into its full potential, including the talents and capabilities of its female population. Saudi Arabia can unlock a significant economic growth and productivity source by empowering women and providing them with equal opportunities. Studies have shown that gender diversity in the workplace leads to better decision-making and innovation. Furthermore, increasing women’s participation in the workforce can also lead to reduced poverty and improved overall social welfare.

Saudi Arabia must invest in programs and initiatives that support women’s entrepreneurship and provide them with the necessary resources and opportunities to succeed.

Social Development and Empowerment

Vision 2030 aims to improve the quality of life for all Saudi citizens, including women. By empowering women and granting them equal rights and opportunities, the government seeks to promote gender equality and enhance social cohesion. This includes initiatives to improve women’s education, healthcare, and social well-being. The government has also implemented policies to increase women’s participation in the workforce and promote entrepreneurship. These efforts have already resulted in a significant increase in women in leadership positions and the establishment of female-owned businesses. 

Global Reputation and Perception

Saudi Arabia is actively working to improve its international image and attract foreign investment and tourism. Recognizing the importance of women’s rights and their active participation in society is a positive step in this direction. By promoting gender equality and empowering women, Saudi Arabia can project a more inclusive and progressive image. Reforms such as allowing women to drive, expanding their employment opportunities, and promoting their participation in public life reflect the government’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and their role in achieving the goals of Vision 2030. Efforts to promote gender equality will and must continue to fully realize the potential of Saudi women and achieve sustainable development to foster Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
